Your email account contains more than you think. It could contain personal information of you and other people.Email is still a primary form of communication and it needs to be protected.
It is also how you get access to other accounts, so when you need a password reset, it will email you a link to click. Now if your email account is compromised, then someone else can request the password reset and they can reset your password!
And then you'll be locked out of your account until you figure out what has happened, by which time it's probably too late.
To protect yourself, choose a strong passphrase and enable 2 Factor Authentication if your email provider supports it. And if they don't, consider getting an email account that does support 2 Factor Authentication.
With 2FA enabled, even if your password is compromised your account will be safe.
